Cyclical
parthenogenesis (alternance between a clonal phase and a single
sexual generation) is the typical reproductive mode of aphids.
The same genotype is able to produce either parthenogenetic forms
or sexual forms, depending on environmental conditions, which constitutes
a case of polyphenism |
|
“Sexual” lines
(which undergo cyclical parthenogenesis) can coexist with “asexual” lines
(which undergo obligate parthenogenesis). This coexistence may
have profound consequences on the population dynamics and population
genetics of aphids, and may have an agronomical impact (epidemiology
of viral diseases transmitted by aphids).
